PET Popular Engineering Lecture: How Do You Build a Bridge? |
|
|
IN A CHANGE TO THE ADVERTISED LECTURE
Prior to the opening of the Clackmannanshire Bridge, the existing Kincardine Bridge had become heavily congested, leading to long delays for the travelling public. High traffic volumes were also causing community severance, noise and air pollution problems for residents of Kincardine village.
Weighing 35,000t and 1.2km in length, the bridge was launched from the north side of the estuary, making it the second longest continuous deck launch in the world. This incremental launch method of construction minimised disruption to the more environmentally sensitive south bank, and also provided a safe, factory area for construction of the main deck on site.
The £120m Upper Forth Crossing at Kincardine (Clackmannanshire Bridge) has brought substantial benefits to Kincardine and the surrounding area. It provides a safer, cleaner and quieter environment with traffic being dramatically reduced through the village of Kincardine, while the sensitive ecology of the Firth of Forth has been protected
Eric discusses the challenges of planning and building a project of this scale in an area of high environmental importance

Patrick Manson and the Scottish Encounter with Tropical Disease |
|
|
Tropical infectious diseases continue to wreak havoc in the world today. Billions of people are exposed to bugs that cause diseases like malaria, elephantiasis, sleeping sickness, bilharzia and leishmaniasis. Many of the infectious agents that cause these diseases were discovered by Scottish investigators in the nineteenth and early twentieth Century.
This can be largely attributed to the fact that Scots trained doctors, fired by the Enlightenment philosophy that dominated the countries culture, set off to man the medical centres of the British Empire just as the microbial basis of many diseases was becoming clear.
Patrick Manson, born in Oldmedrum and trained in medicine at the University of Aberdeen, is today recognised as "The Father of Tropical Medicine" as he established the study of infections commonly associated with the tropics as a dedicated branch of medicine. Manson influenced a series of young Scots doctors to follow in his wake.
Ronald Ross was the first Briton awarded the Nobel prize for his discovery of the role of mosquitoes in transmission of malaria.
David Bruce showed that trypanosomes caused sleeping sickness
William Leishman found another parasite responsible for Kala Azar (Leishmaniasis).
This presentation will focus on the discoveries of Manson and his successors and discuss how these discoveries continue to impact on our understanding of tropical diseases today.
Fifty pence from each ticket sold for this event will be donated to Developing World Health, a charity combating tropical infectious diseases.

Happy Birthday Laser! |
|
|
2010 is International Year of the Laser marking the 50th anniversary of the birth of the laser. In May 1960, Theodore Maiman revealed the first laser to an astonished world. Long thought of as "a solution without a problem" lasers are now in common use; from the simple laser pointer to the DVD player, and holography to thermonuclear fusion the properties and capabilities of modern lasers are astonishing. Professor Watson outlines the steps leading up to the invention of the laser and demonstrates its use in science, industry, commerce and our everyday lives.
