FIRST SELL OUT FOR TECHFEST 2009

A hands-on workshop on cutting edge product design, aimed at teenagers, has become the first event of this year's TechFest In September festival to sell out.

The Make It So event at Gray's School of Art will give participants the opportunity to experience cutting-edge 3D scanning and rapid prototyping technology, which is used in manufacturing.

With a packed programme of 170 events, workshops and shows than ever, the TechFest In September 2009 festival is gearing up to be the biggest yet.

Aberdeen's annual festival of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), is set to attract a record 20,000 visitors between September 11 and 28.

Sponsored by joint principal funders Shell and BP, the festival is now in its 16th year, with the aim of engaging young people in the four main subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and encouraging them to go on to follow a career which utilises these skills, as well as instilling the relevance of STEM in adult life.

Liz Hodge, Managing Director of TechFest-Setpoint, the charity which runs TechFest In September, said: "This year's TechFest has an exciting and varied programme of events designed to appeal to different age groups and audiences, like this one, which was aimed at teenagers.

"There has been a lot of interest in the events and workshops so it's great to see them getting booked up.

"For the first time bookings are being taken through Aberdeen Box Office and online, which is making it even easier for everyone to snap up tickets for all the fantastic events, which are supported by our joint principal funders BP and Shell."

The public programme ranges from loud and lively shows aimed at children to thought-provoking lunchtime and evening events for adults, featuring everything from exploding vegetables through to a presentation on the connection between energy, astronomy and cosmology.

The first event is on Friday, September 11, the final day of the Offshore Europe exhibition and conference, when Richard Noble OBE will appear at Aberdeen's Beach Ballroom to talk about the Bloodhound project to build the world's fastest car – capable of reaching 1,000mph!

Other key highlights include Dr Bunhead from TV's Brainiac, who will return with his new show, and a family activity weekend at the Beach Ballroom and Leisure Centre, with the chance to hold real rocks from the moon.

Among the high profile presenters is wildlife expert Saba Douglas-Hamilton, who presented the BBC's Big Cat Diaries and The Secret Life of Elephants and will share her own experiences from filming creatures in some of the most remote corners of the planet.

The family shows include Visualise Reloaded – Less Explanation; More Exploration, an action packed show from the Edinburgh Fringe, which will look at the world around us.

Technology at Work tours will give visitors a behind the scenes experience and there will be also be guided tours around local areas of natural beauty, such as Forvie Nature Reserve.

As well as the public programme, thousands of pupils are also signed up to attend a host of science and mathematics-themed TechFest events for schools.
