TOP PHYSICIST TO EXPLORE LINK BETWEEN ASTRONOMY AND COSMOLOGY

A lecture being held in Aberdeen on Monday will explore how the Earth's climate is influenced by the weather in space.

Dr Charles Wang, a top physicist at the University of Aberdeen, will give a presentation on energy issues in astronomy and cosmology as part of TechFest In September, Aberdeen's annual festival of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Dr Wang will look at aspects of astronomy and cosmology including solar wind, cosmic rays, dark energy and black holes, highlighting their remarkable origins, evolutions and observational effects.

These are hot topics as the Earth's climate is constantly influenced by space weather and climate change is a subject of major global significance, both now and in the future.

Liz Hodge, Managing Director of TechFest-SetPoint, which runs the festival, said: "This lecture is going to be very interesting and topical as climate change is something which is making major headlines at the moment as the world tries to reduce its carbon footprint.

"We expect tickets for this event will be highly sought after because it is such a topical issue and would urge those wishing to attend to buy tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment."

The evening lecture will take place at the University of Aberdeen's Fraser Noble Building at 7.30pm on Monday, September 21.

Tickets, costing £3.50 for adults and £3 for children and concessions (excludes booking fee), are available by calling 01224 641122 or visiting www.boxofficeaberdeen.com

TechFest In September is now in its 16th year of engaging young people in the four main STEM subjects and encouraging them to go on to follow a career which utilises these skills, as well as instilling the relevance of STEM in adult life.

The two-week festival is once again being supported by joint principal funders Shell and BP, demonstrating their investment in a STEM-literate nation and commitment to the future development of the global oil and gas industry.

With more events, workshops and shows than ever, this year's TechFest is set to attract a record 20,000 visitors by September 28.

As well as the public programme, thousands of pupils are also taking part in a host of science and mathematics-themed TechFest events for schools.
