Design Rocks Challenge |

After an illustrated talk on design and its significance to the music industry, a maximum of 30 students will be divided into teams of 4 to participate in the 'Design Rocks' challenge.
Groups will either design a trophy or a poster for the design rocks music awards. Using a range of supplied materials, teams will be asked to consider colour, images, shapes and different fonts to complete their designs. The teams producing the best trophy and the best poster will then enter a 'battle of the bands' challenge on the 'Rock Band' computer game to be declared the overall winners.
This is a 90 minute workshop (not including set up and break down time) in your own school or at Glasgow Caledonian University.

SHELL GREENPOWER CHALLENGE FOR SCHOOLS |

Greenpower is a national project which has been running since 1999 and is designed to promote and encourage young people to develop an interest in and understanding of engineering and technology. The programme involves students in the practical applications of engineering as they design, construct and race an electric car. The project is divided into separate 'Formulae' to suit different age groups and to allow continuity from Primary right through to S6 - Primary 7 (Goblin), S1-S4 (F24) and post 16 years (F35). Each stage builds and develops the skills gained from the previous Formula. Students are encouraged to run this project as a racing team focusing not just on the engineering challenge but also to consider the marketing, sponsorship and business aspects involved. Curricular areas which may be involved include Business Studies, Design, Graphics, Mathematics, Physics, Science and Technological Studies

Single celled bacteria are capable of working together and forming complex communities called a "biofilm". Life in a biofilm allows bacteria to combine their efforts and achieve tasks that would not be possible alone. A very common example of a biofilm that we battle with everyday is dental plaque. The talk will discuss how bacteria communicate with each other to form these communities and discuss the implications they have on our daily lives.

Animal Encounters with Mr Bug |

In a typical 60 minute session pupils will have a chance to hold giant cockroaches and snails, stroke a lizard and a python and see a tarantula and a scorpion at close quarters. They will hear about the animals' biology and lives in the wild – in a safe, fun and memorable format. The sessions can be linked to class topics such as minibeasts, 'Our Garden', rainforests, conservation or food webs. Art sessions can also be organised to encourage pupils to better study the animals and their appearance.

What makes a smile and what do we need to keep smiling? This multifaceted project takes the student from S1-S6 through a series of interrelated social, cultural and biomedical activities. S1-S3 students will investigate what a smile means to different cultures and look at the role of taste and food in smiling. S4-S5 students will look at the effect of health and diet to keep us smiling and some of the measures used to ensure we keep smiling such as the use of toothbrushes and mouth wash. S6 students will investigate what happens when we don't look after our smile and the effect this can have at a social and biomedical level.

Science Roadshow |

In the Science Roadshow we offer a range of experiments in Biology and Forensic Science to S2 in secondary schools. This exercise, on Wednesdays, runs from October through to May and we normally visit about 25 schools during a year. It is an all day exercise seeing all second year pupils in the school during the day. We operate a rotation of small experiments for groups of 6-8 pupils at a time and individuals do three different experiments in a single period. Our objective is to try and persuade more pupils to think about taking 2 or more Science subjects through to higher. Current experiments include 'Finger Print Analysis', 'A Diagnostic Test to Identify Athletics Drugs Cheats', 'Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Analysis' and 'Antacid Treatments for Indigestion'.

Stag Night Murder – Forensic Science Taster Day |

For the Stag Night Murder, Forensic Science staff have developed a case study involving a suspicious death and S5/S6 pupils assess all the available evidence from the crime scene in order to determine which of the various suspects is the perpetrator of the murder (if indeed it was murder). This exercise is usually run outwith the University teaching semesters in June/July but occasionally at other times during the year. Pupils are required to analyse various pieces of evidence including fingerprints, hairs, DNA, metals and drugs. The events run for two hour periods and take place in the forensic laboratories here at Abertay.
The Stag Night Murder is available to secondary schools in the Tayside, Fife, Perthshire and Angus regions and is generally run about 3-4 times per year for groups of no more than 18 pupils at a time.

Where Do Medicines Come From? How Are They Made? How Do They Work? |

During this interactive, hands-on session, pupils will see the extraction of a crude drug from its natural source material and learn about how such drugs are further developed into the medicines we are familiar with. They will have the chance to prepare a range of different dosage forms suitable for a variety of patients and conditions.
Pupils will also consider the cardiovascular system, look at a patient's notes and consider how the patient's condition might be monitored and treated. They will be encouraged to think about risk factors for cardiovascular disease and be given the opportunity to measure each other's blood pressure, height and weight.

The Medicines Journey |

Join us on a medicines journey from a test tube to a patient. Get some hands-on experience formulating a drug and dispensing it for patient use. Consider how your manufactured product can be used to help patients. Venture through sets of real patients' notes and see how pharmacists use the information from these notes to clinically manage their patients' medical conditions and drug therapy. Measure your own blood pressure, weight and height and see if you really are full of hot air by measuring your lung function using a spirometer and a peak flow meter. Your journey will end with you designing a public health poster to promote good health in a particularly topical area of health promotion.

A sphygmomanometer and ECG device will be attached to the student and resting blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and electrocardiogram (ECG) will be determined and discussed in the light of our understanding of the cardiovascular system. The effects of exercise on BP, HR and ECG will be determined. The effects of hormones and drugs will be monitored on a simulation of the human cardiovascular system.

Evaluation of pressures during walking on the human foot and the magnitude and direction of the Ground Reaction Force (GRF) during normal walking. |
|

In prosthetics and orthotics we learn the skills of evaluating ground reaction forces for normal walking. This activity will allow students to analyse the human body in engineering terms and to use biomechanical principles to see the different influences during normal walking.
A gait lab with video cameras and a Kistler force plate will be used. This will allow the students to assess a gait pattern and the ground reaction force (using Newton's laws). They will then apply a simple brace (knee-ankle-foot orthosis) which will lock one knee and prevent normal motion of the knee while walking. They will then reassess the gait pattern by analysing the magnitude and direction of the Ground Reaction Force (GRF). This will allow them to evaluate moments on the ankle, knee and hip joints and the long term effects this could have on people after injury causing this gait deviation. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (charity SC004064) operates Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park as well as projects across the country and abroad. The Society runs education classes all year (Nursery to adult); a science summer school for 14-17 year olds; student conferences for debate and lectures; international school-linking work; and practical investigation of science in a real context. The Society has a university primate behavioural research centre on site in Edinburgh and is developing veterinary and genetics lab facilities. A Microscopic Journey through Bone |

When this process goes wrong, bones become weak and fracture easily, for example in the disease osteoporosis. The workshop involves undertaking a series of health and fitness performance measures in the University of Abertay's Human Performance Laboratory using state-of-the-art sport science instrumentation. Volunteer subjects will undertake a variety of physical activities whilst undergoing physiological measurement. Explanation is then provided about what the measurements indicate about the underlying human biology.

Chirality in Chemistry |

The term chiral is used to describe an object that has a non-identical mirror image. For example, gloves are chiral: the right glove and the left glove are mirror images of one another and yet are non-identical. You can't put your left hand in a right-handed glove! Molecules can also be chiral. Often it is important to produce only one of the chiral forms because the molecules, despite being so similar, can have markedly different biological activities. Studying Climate Change One Drop at a Time - Trapping Aerosols with Light |

This is a lecture based activity with some demonstrations. It aims to discuss the basic science of a technique called optical tweezers in which light, in a somewhat counter-intuitive way, can be used to pick up and trap microscopic particles. In particular the talk will look at how this technique can be used to study atmospheric science which ultimately leads to a better understanding of how the climate works. This is achieved by trapping and manipulating individual aerosol droplets, which are one of the most important and least understood components of the atmosphere. The talk also aims to try and show how modern science is increasingly interdisciplinary.

Science Roadshow |

In the Science Roadshow we offer a range of experiments in Biology and Forensic Science to S2 in secondary schools. This exercise, on Wednesdays, runs from October through to May and we normally visit about 25 schools during a year. It is an all day exercise seeing all second year pupils in the school during the day. We operate a rotation of small experiments for groups of 6-8 pupils at a time and individuals do three different experiments in a single period. Our objective is to try and persuade more pupils to think about taking 2 or more Science subjects through to higher. Current experiments include 'Finger Print Analysis', 'A Diagnostic Test to Identify Athletics Drugs Cheats', 'Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Analysis' and 'Antacid Treatments for Indigestion'.

For the Stag Night Murder, Forensic Science staff have developed a case study involving a suspicious death and S5/S6 pupils assess all the available evidence from the crime scene in order to determine which of the various suspects is the perpetrator of the murder (if indeed it was murder). This exercise is usually run outwith the University teaching semesters in June/July but occasionally at other times during the year. Pupils are required to analyse various pieces of evidence including fingerprints, hairs, DNA, metals and drugs. The events run for two hour periods and take place in the forensic laboratories here at Abertay.
The Stag Night Murder is available to secondary schools in the Tayside, Fife, Perthshire and Angus regions and is generally run about 3-4 times per year for groups of no more than 18 pupils at a time.

Where Do Medicines Come From? How Are They Made? How Do They Work? |

During this interactive, hands-on session, pupils will see the extraction of a crude drug from its natural source material and learn about how such drugs are further developed into the medicines we are familiar with. They will have the chance to prepare a range of different dosage forms suitable for a variety of patients and conditions.
Pupils will also consider the cardiovascular system, look at a patient's notes and consider how the patient's condition might be monitored and treated. They will be encouraged to think about risk factors for cardiovascular disease and be given the opportunity to measure each other's blood pressure, height and weight.

Join us on a medicines journey from a test tube to a patient. Get some hands-on experience formulating a drug and dispensing it for patient use. Consider how your manufactured product can be used to help patients. Venture through sets of real patients' notes and see how pharmacists use the information from these notes to clinically manage their patients' medical conditions and drug therapy. Measure your own blood pressure, weight and height and see if you really are full of hot air by measuring your lung function using a spirometer and a peak flow meter. Your journey will end with you designing a public health poster to promote good health in a particularly topical area of health promotion.

The Smallpeice Trust is an independent educational charity that promotes engineering, design, manufacturing and technology careers to young people. Core activities include running four-day heavily subsidised courses for students in S1-S5. Courses take place around the school holidays at Universities around the country. Students have the choice of over 30 different courses with activities to develop their skills in creativity, design and teamwork. Subjects include biomedical engineering, electronics, marine technology, materials technology, mining & minerals, motorsports engineering, nanotechnology, nuclear engineering, robotics, supercomputing and sustainable energy.
The Trust also visits schools for short half or full day introductory sessions designed for S1-S3 students (12 to 14 year olds) to enhance their understanding of, and aptitude for, problem solving, creativity, design, and engineering. They are easy to organise, inspiring and fun for everyone taking part. Groups of up to 50 students work together in small teams on 'design and make' projects to improve their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Studying Climate Change One Drop at a Time - Trapping Aerosols with Light |
|

This is a lecture based activity with some demonstrations. It aims to discuss the basic science of a technique called optical tweezers in which light, in a somewhat counter-intuitive way, can be used to pick up and trap microscopic particles. In particular the talk will look at how this technique can be used to study atmospheric science which ultimately leads to a better understanding of how the climate works. This is achieved by trapping and manipulating individual aerosol droplets, which are one of the most important and least understood components of the atmosphere. The talk also aims to try and show how modern science is increasingly interdisciplinary.

These demands are increasing and their effect on flooding and climate change are increasing too. This talk will focus on water as a resource and the human impact on the water environment. It looks at how the use of water in cities is connected to wider catchment and hydrological processes and will consider the negative and positive aspects of managing water in cities. Issues of water pollution and urban eco-systems will be addressed. Class groups will be encouraged to get involved in examining case-studies where we can improve the situation for the future and work towards more sustainable water management, more sustainable city environments and start to tackle adaptation to climate change.

The Society runs education classes all year (Nursery to adult); a science summer school for 14-17 year olds; student conferences for debate and lectures; international school-linking work; and practical investigation of science in a real context. The Society has a university primate behavioural research centre on site in Edinburgh and is developing veterinary and genetics lab facilities. STEM IN THE PIPELINE |

STEM In The Pipeline is a 3 month oil and gas industry project for teams of S6 pupils. The project has been designed with industry professionals to enable the students to apply their knowledge of academic subjects, develop useful skills for university life and learn first-hand about the oil and gas industry. Now in its third year STEM In The Pipeline is again available to schools in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
STEM In The Pipeline starts with an Introduction Day at the University of Aberdeen in August. This is a full day with students taking an active part in workshops relevant to the project. The bulk of the project work is done between August and November at school. With guidance from industry professionals the students produce a Field Development Plan. Finally the Presentation Day takes place at an industry venue. Here the teams give a presentation of their work to a panel of assessors and to other interested visitors.

The Building Bridges Challenge |

After an illustrated talk on the design and structure of bridges, a maximum of 30 pupils will be divided into teams of 4 to participate in the Bridge Building Challenge.
Using balsa wood, teams are required to build a bridge which spans one metre. Teams will be encouraged to consider structural mechanics in their design. The team with the bridge that can support the greatest weight from its middle point will be declared the winners.
This is a 90 minute workshop (not including set up and break down time) in your own school or at Glasgow Caledonian University.

THE SMALLPEICE TRUST |

The Smallpeice Trust is an independent educational charity that promotes engineering, design, manufacturing and technology careers to young people. Core activities include running four-day heavily subsidised courses for students in S1-S5. Courses take place around the school holidays at Universities around the country. Students have the choice of over 30 different courses with activities to develop their skills in creativity, design and teamwork. Subjects include biomedical engineering, electronics, marine technology, materials technology, mining & minerals, motorsports engineering, nanotechnology, nuclear engineering, robotics, supercomputing and sustainable energy.
The Trust also visits schools for short half or full day introductory sessions designed for S1-S3 students (12 to 14 year olds) to enhance their understanding of, and aptitude for, problem solving, creativity, design, and engineering. They are easy to organise, inspiring and fun for everyone taking part. Groups of up to 50 students work together in small teams on 'design and make' projects to improve their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Medicines Journey |
|
| |
Join us on a medicines journey from a test tube to a patient. Get some hands-on experience formulating a drug and dispensing it for patient use. Consider how your manufactured product can be used to help patients. Venture through sets of real patients' notes and see how pharmacists use the information from these notes to clinically manage their patients' medical conditions and drug therapy. Measure your own blood pressure, weight and height and see if you really are full of hot air by measuring your lung function using a spirometer and a peak flow meter. Your journey will end with you designing a public health poster to promote good health in a particularly topical area of health promotion.

Evaluation of pressures during walking on the human foot and the magnitude and direction of the Ground Reaction Force (GRF) during normal walking. |

In prosthetics and orthotics we learn the skills of evaluating ground reaction forces for normal walking. This activity will allow students to analyse the human body in engineering terms and to use biomechanical principles to see the different influences during normal walking.
A gait lab with video cameras and a Kistler force plate will be used. This will allow the students to assess a gait pattern and the ground reaction force (using Newton's laws). They will then apply a simple brace (knee-ankle-foot orthosis) which will lock one knee and prevent normal motion of the knee while walking. They will then reassess the gait pattern by analysing the magnitude and direction of the Ground Reaction Force (GRF). This will allow them to evaluate moments on the ankle, knee and hip joints and the long term effects this could have on people after injury causing this gait deviation. SHELL GREENPOWER CHALLENGE FOR SCHOOLS |

Greenpower is a national project which has been running since 1999 and is designed to promote and encourage young people to develop an interest in and understanding of engineering and technology. The programme involves students in the practical applications of engineering as they design, construct and race an electric car. The project is divided into separate 'Formulae' to suit different age groups and to allow continuity from Primary right through to S6 - Primary 7 (Goblin), S1-S4 (F24) and post 16 years (F35). Each stage builds and develops the skills gained from the previous Formula. Students are encouraged to run this project as a racing team focusing not just on the engineering challenge but also to consider the marketing, sponsorship and business aspects involved. Curricular areas which may be involved include Business Studies, Design, Graphics, Mathematics, Physics, Science and Technological Studies

The workshop involves undertaking a series of health and fitness performance measures in the University of Abertay's Human Performance Laboratory using state-of-the-art sport science instrumentation. Studying Climate Change One Drop at a Time - Trapping Aerosols with Light |
|
| |
This is a lecture based activity with some demonstrations. It aims to discuss the basic science of a technique called optical tweezers in which light, in a somewhat counter-intuitive way, can be used to pick up and trap microscopic particles. In particular the talk will look at how this technique can be used to study atmospheric science which ultimately leads to a better understanding of how the climate works. This is achieved by trapping and manipulating individual aerosol droplets, which are one of the most important and least understood components of the atmosphere. The talk also aims to try and show how modern science is increasingly interdisciplinary.

How to Explore the Universe: A Tale of Telescopes, Time Travel and Extra-terrestrials |

2009 is the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) celebrating the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of the telescope to study the night sky. The Institute's Schools and Colleges Lecture Tour for 2009 will show how, due to progress in technology, astronomers can now observe things further and further away and therefore further back in time; astronomical observations can be used to learn more about the origins and future of the universe; modern telescopes can be used by astronomers to look at the universe in ever greater detail.
The show will involve hands-on demonstrations, giving students the opportunity to try some astronomy themselves using some of the most advanced telescopes in the world.

Content – Introductory talk (15 mins);Experiment - angular acceleration vs. applied torque (60 mins); Experiment - centripetal force varying radius and applied force (60 mins); (An alternative experiment may be possible. Consult directly with Dr McGloin)
