Shell Greenpower Challenge – Scotland at Grampian Transport Museum Alford on 11 12,13 June 2010

Bright Sparks Race to Cut Future Carbon Emissions

Future engineers from 23 primary and 15 secondary schools will be racing their electric-powered cars at  the  'Shell Greenpower Challenge-Scotland' event held over three days at the Grampian Transport Museum in Alford, Aberdeenshire. As the world looks to cut carbon dioxide emissions in half before 2050, the youngsters will be taking to the track in cars capable of travelling many miles using only electric batteries – costing just a few pounds!

The event for primary school pupils in 'Goblin' cars takes place on Friday 11th June and the event for secondary school pupils in 'F24' cars is on Saturday and Sunday 12 & 13th June. The F24 secondary teams will vie for a place in the Greenpower National Final at Goodwood Motor Circuit in October 2010 with participation in the final also sponsored by Shell.

Paul Lawson, team manager of the Grampian Transport Museum's Young Engineers' Club says his teams are raring to go: "The Formula 24 challenge is an excellent opportunity for young people to get exposed to engineering and science, work as part of a team and to have fun driving the car or working in the pit team.  We have enjoyed two years of competition, particularly the national event at Goodwood. I'd strongly recommend others to join in and have some fun!

Paul Garnham, Project Leader with Shell Technology Solutions in Aberdeen who is a board trustee of TechFest-SetPoint, the organisation behind the Shell Greenpower Challenge in Scotland, said: "This event encourages youngsters to take an interest in engineering and technology and gives them a great opportunity to experience these subjects hands-on. They also get exposure to teamwork, planning, design and marketing. What's more, they all seem to find the whole process of building and racing the cars to be tremendous fun."

The 'Shell Greenpower Challenge-Scotland 'is managed by TechFest-SetPoint, a charity whose aim is to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to young people www.techfestsetpoint.org.uk
