PRESS RELEASE - FOR RELEASE THURSDAY 12TH MAY
S3 Pupils from schools throughout Orkney will today (Thursday 12th) attend TechFest-SetPoint's Maths In The Pipeline in Kirkwall, the first time that this prestigious event is being held in Orkney. This one-day event, supported by the Scottish Government and sponsored by the SPE aims to show pupils the importance of maths within the oil and gas industry.
Colin Black, SPE Career Guidance Chairman said "MIP gives talented pupils the opportunity to better understand this vibrant Oil & Gas Industry and potential opportunities to join the sector, we are very supportive of this great program"
Dr Yashka Manning from TechFest-SetPoint said "We are delighted to have the opportunity to host this event for the first time in Orkney; the pupils will get the chance to work with industry professionals and explore how integral mathematics is to the oil and gas industry. This event has been running for several years, however the furthest north we have taken it has previously been Inverness, this is a great opportunity to expand the reach of this project."
The busy day consists of hands-on workshops, based on real-life data, presented by industry professionals. The day cumulates in a business challenge with teams of pupils competing to present the best field development plan to a panel of industry professionals.
Schools taking part: Kirkwall Grammar School, Stromness Academy, Westray Junior High School.
