Shell Greenpower Challenge - Grampian Transport Museum Alford June 20 and 21.
Pupils take green route along the fast lane
There was an exciting buzz at the Grampian Transport Museum at the weekend as enterprising young engineers and technologists from schools throughout the country took up the Shell Greenpower Challenge in electric powered cars that they designed and built themselves.
Around 300 primary and secondary school pupils from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Argyll and the Highlands competed in a fun packed final over two days at the track in Alford - Primary school pupils in 'Goblin' cars took to the circuit on Saturday 20 June while the secondary school pupils in 'F24' cars was on Sunday 21 June.
Sir Robert Smith MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine presented the trophies on Saturday to the primary school winners Dunecht Primary School, the runners-up Kirkhill Primary School and third place, Logie Durno Primary School.
The secondary school winning team was the "Roadrunners" from Thurso High School, while Grampian Transport Museum's Young Engineers' team "Alford Rocket" came second and Tarbert Academy's "Electronicals" team came third. The prizes were presented to the secondary pupil by Mr Jim Niven, Shell Communications Stakeholder manager.
Part of the winning prize for the "Roadrunners" is a trip to attend the National Final at Goodwood Motor Circuit in October 2009, courtesy of event sponsors Shell U.K.Limited.
The challenge is divided to suit different age groups:- Primary 7 'Formula Goblin' features a 24 volt electric motor and 2 x12 volt batteries; S1-S4 Formula 24 features a 24 volt electric motor and 4 x12 volt batteries. Each stage builds and develops the skills gained from the previous stage. Pupils are encouraged to approach the project as a racing team, focusing not just on the engineering challenge but also the marketing, sponsorship and business aspects involved.
The Shell Greenpower Challenge is managed by TechFest-SetPoint, a charity whose aim is to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to young people www.techfestsetpoint.org.uk
