Shell Greenpower Challenge - Grampian Transport Museum Alford June 20 and 21.

Pupils take green route along the fast lane

Could you design, build and race an electric car? Enterprising young engineers and technologists from schools in Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Argyll and the Highlands took up the Shell Greenpower Challenge to do just that.

As a result around 300 primary and secondary school pupils will compete in a fun packed final over two days at the Grampian Transport Museum, Alford.

The event for primary school pupils in 'Goblin' cars takes place on Saturday 20 June and the event for secondary school pupils in 'F24' cars is on Sunday 21 June. The winning F24 team will also attend the National Final at Goodwood Motor Circuit in October 2009, courtesy of event sponsors Shell U.K.Limited.

Sir Robert Smith MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine will present the trophies at the Saturday event with representatives of Shell doing the honours on the Sunday.

Paul Garnham, Project Leader with Shell Technology Solutions in Aberdeen who is a board trustee of TechFest-SetPoint, the organisation behind the Shell Greenpower Challenge in Scotland, said: "This event encourages youngsters to take an interest in engineering and technology and gives them a great opportunity to experience these subjects hands-on. They also get exposure to teamwork, planning, design and marketing. What's more, they all seem to find the whole process of building and racing the cars to be tremendous fun."

The project is divided to suit different age groups:- Primary 7 'Formula Goblin' features a 24 volt electric motor and 2 x12 volt batteries; S1-S4 Formula 24 features a 24 volt electric motor and 4 x12 volt batteries. Each stage builds and develops the skills gained from the previous stage. Pupils are encouraged to approach the project as a racing team, focusing not just on the engineering challenge but also the marketing, sponsorship and business aspects involved.

The Shell Greenpower Challenge is managed by TechFest-SetPoint, a charity whose aim is to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to young people www.techfestsetpoint.org.uk
