Full STEM Ahead!
Thirteen school teams worked well beyond the boundaries of the classroom and completed the ‘STEM In The Pipeline’ project run annually by TechFest-SetPoint.
Over the last three months the 17 year olds have put their knowledge of physics, maths, chemistry & geology into practice and produced a field development plan to optimise the production of a realistic field whilst minimising CO2 emissions.
The teams produced reports of a very high standard and presented these to a panel of senior industry professionals. Whilst all particpants received STEM In The Pipeline certificates and earned BA Silver CREST Awards for the level of their work the judges had to extend their deliberation time to decide on winners.
Finally awards were made as follows:
1st Place: INVERCO from Inverurie Academy
2nd Place: The Mavericks from Aberdeen Grammar School
3rd Place: WEST-TEC from Westhill Academy
The George Buckenham Trophy for Innovation was awarded to Blue Oak from Banchory Academy.
Congratulations to superb teams from Banff Academy,Fraserburgh Academy, The Gordon Schools, Mackie Academy, Peterhead Academy, Oldmachar Academy, Portlethen Academy, Ellon Academy and a further team from Westhill Academy for producing such a close-fought challenge.
Along the way the school teams had invaluable support from teams of young professionals from BP, Chevron and ConocoPhillips.
INVERCO from Inverurie Academy will be presenting their project to members of the Energy Institute at February's meeting.
