CREST AWARD WINNER MEETS PRIME MINISTER

Holly Batchelor, a previous Nuffield student and winner of the 2007 national CREST final, recently met the Prime Minister and formed part of a prestigious panel alongside Lord Drayson, Minister for Science and Innovation, and John Denham MP, Secretary of State for Innovation Universities and Skills.

She spoke about the value of authentic practical experience that she gained when doing her CREST accredited Nuffield Science Bursary project at the University of Edinburgh.

Holly, who is now studying for a Masters in Physics at the University of St Andrews, Fife, said: ‘Winning a place at the CREST Fair to display my project was a turning point for me – getting recognition for my hard work inspired me to pursue a career in science.

‘It was encouraging to hear that the government has recognised and is promoting the importance of science and technology, which will be crucial for the future of the UK economy.’

Five other recent CREST winners - Georgina Little, Elisabeth Muller, Anna Ressel, James Stefaniak and Alexander White – were also invited to the Building the Britain of the Future Expo event and had the opportunity to chat with scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs.

The evening event formed part of the Science and Innovation Day that began with the launch of the government’s Science: [So What?] campaign. The campaign aims to highlight the vital role science plays in our everyday lives and in driving our economy.
