Nuffield Celebration Event 2008
74 Students (33 male and 41 female) from 44 schools (21 regions) completed their Nuffield projects. 44 Organisations/departments hosted the placements throughout Scotland, including Shetland, Orkney, Argyll and Dumfries as well as Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Fife and Glasgow. The projects were very varied and included pure mathematics, marine biology, zoology, botany, chemistry, astrochemistry, virology, physics, computing, environmental science, biochemistry parasitology and many more.
62 Students presented their work in poster form at the Celebration Event which was held in the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh on Friday 28th August 2008. Five students also volunteered to give a presentation of their experiences to the audience:- Josephine Holbrook of Beeslack Community High School who carried out her project at the Dunstffange Marine Laboratories in Oban; Lee Marshall of Alford Academy who undertook a Computing project at The Robert Gordon University; Thomas Davidson of Harris Academy who investigated earthquakes at Dundee University; Eleanor Wigham of Linlithgow Academy who went to Edinburgh Zoo for her project; and Declan Bryans of Cardinal Newman HS who carried out his project at Schering-Plough in Lanarkshire. The audience were also treated to a presentation from a former Nuffield student, Sharon Glass, who had carried out her project at Ciba Specialty Chemicals in 2007 and won a prize at the BA Science Fair in London.
Mr Anthony Tomei, Director of the Nuffield Foundation, presented the students with their certificates of achievement.
