In the Circle of Death Only One Will Survive

In Josephus' circle of death only one will survive. Would you let luck decide your destiny? Or would you get Maths to rescue you?

Over 100 pupils, parents and teachers will gather at the University of Aberdeen Conference Centre today to investigate the plight of the roman historian Josephus Flavius. The occasion is the final lecture in a series of 8 Mathematics Masterclasses run by TechFest-SetPoint and sponsored by Chevron for local secondary pupils with a talent and enthusiasm for mathematics.

Today's lecture, given by Dr Vinay Kathotia, Clothworkers' Fellow of Mathematics at the Royal Institution, will be followed by a presentation by Scott Murdoch, Mechanical Technician with Chevron and the presentation of Royal Institution certificates to over 40 pupils from 14 schools.

Vivien Ellins, STEM Coordinator with TechFest-SetPoint said "Throughout the series the students have been introduced to new mathematical topics and their applications including Campanology, The Golden Ratio, Collision Investigations and Polyhedra. We're fortunate at this final lecture to connect the academic and practical applications of maths for the audience of pupils, parents and teachers."
