TECHFEST-SETPOINT pipeline challenge attracts top students to industry

Over 125 top maths students from 24 schools will be putting their skills to the test when they visit BP and Chevron in the next three weeks. The S4 pupils will be working alongside oil and gas industry professionals in three one-day ‘Maths in the Pipeline’ events developed by TechFest-SetPoint, BP, University of Aberdeen and the Robert Gordon University.

The student teams will tackle a series of realistic problems in exploration, forecasting and production introduced by professionals from BP, Chevron and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. During the day, as the student teams gain confidence in their new environment, a field optimisation business challenge is set. With a deadline to meet, health and safety and environmental considerations to take into account, a highly competitive atmosphere emerges between the teams as they prepare to present their solutions. Their success depends on accuracy, team work & communication skills. The industry professionals are the final judges and plaques are awarded to the members of the winning team.

Lynne Staples-Scott, BP Education Manager, Scotland said -

"The North sea oil and gas industry offers tremendous opportunities for young people across a wide range of careers. We are delighted to once again be supporting 'Maths in the Pipeline' which is a greatway of demonstratingthe link between what young people learn in school and its application in industry. The young people involved will learn about some of the exciting and interesting challenges faced by our industry and will hopefully be encouraged to continue their studies in subjects such as maths and science as they continue through their education."

Gert De Jonge, Technology Co-ordinator at Chevron Upstream Europe said, ‘Chevron has been involved with the project for several years and we place great emphasis on nurturing the talent of tomorrow. It’s an event which attracts great interest from our people across the business unit and we’re looking forward to another successful Maths in the Pipeline.
