SCHOOL TEAMS AIM FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION
School teams across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will soon discover the details of their challenges in the Go4SET Energy Conservation Project.
Eight teams will represent Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in this national initiative which is part of the Engineering Development Trust’s suite of schemes. Go4SET is aimed at stimulating the interest of young people in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) at a key stage in their education.
Each participating school will field a team of six 12 to 14 year olds working with their teacher and a company mentor.
The theme is Energy Conservation and the exact details of the project will be announced at the launch event on Friday 2nd November at BP, Dyce, Aberdeen. Teams will also meet their company mentor at the launch event.
All teams will work on the same project brief over a period of 10 weeks and the project phase involves a company visit to show the pupils the relevance of the project in an industrial context. The Aberdeen programme culminates on Friday 29th February 2008 with a Celebration & Assessment Day which provides an opportunity for pupils to display and demonstrate their individual projects to a group of assessors and guests attending the event.
BP is the lead sponsor for Go4SET in the UK and commenting on the programme, External Affairs Director for Scotland, Tim Smith said, "The Go4SET programme is an excellent way of getting young people to realise that science and engineering touch every part of our lives every day and that these subjects can be great fun as well as rewarding."
“The teams are keen to find out what their project will involve and with the skills and enthusiasm that abound in the region I am sure they will produce some excellent work” says Liz Hodge, Managing Director of TechFest-SetPoint, the local organisers of the event.
