Primary school children across Grampian compete in Junior Engineer for Britain K'Nex Challenge 2010

One hundred and sixty six aspiring young engineers from across North East Scotland were competing on Friday 21st May at Aberdeen's Beach Ballroom to try to secure a place in the next round of the Junior Engineer for Britain K'NEX Challenge 2010.  The primary school pupils from 85 schools in Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire were set the challenge of building a model boat to transport flour across a lake for the townspeople of Prince Arthur's Camelot.

The Scottish engineers of the future were given just 45 minutes to complete their project, and Nathan Chambers and Ross Murphy, both aged 10, from Auchterellon Primary School scooped first prize and will go forward, with thirteen other highly commended teams to compete against teams form Angus, Tayside and Perth & Kinross on 28th May. One Scottish winning pair will then go on to the UK National Final at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford on 11th June.

This year's competition saw more than 4,000 children participate in the challenge across the North East, with the joint support of Talisman Energy (UK) Limited and Wood Group.  Representatives from both companies were on the judging panel at the event. 60 volunteer STEM Ambassadors assisted with the delivery of the challenge in schools throughout Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire last term.

Talisman's UK Corporate Affairs and Communications Manager Jonathan Moore  said: "Once again the children have amazed us with their invention and enthusiasm and we hope many of them will go on to consider engineering when they are making career choices."

"This has been an excellent project to be involved with and I congratulate each and every one of the pupils who took part.  I hope that some will take their potential on to secondary school and university, and we may well see them in the oil and gas industry in years to come."

Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Managing Director, Robin Watson added:

“Wood Group is delighted to co-sponsor the K’Nex Challenge again with Talisman which is always great fun and will hopefully encourage youngsters to look at a career in engineering.”
