MATHS IN THE PIPELINE SUCCESS FOR SOUTH LANARKSHIRE SCHOOLS
59 top maths students from 14 South Lanarkshire schools gathered at Hamilton Town House on June 16th to take part in a day of Maths In The Pipeline.The S4 pupils were mixed into teams and worked alongside a team of oil and gas industry professionals and university lecturers.
In the morning the student teams used their maths skills to tackle a series of problems in exploration, forecasting and navigation. In the afternoon, equipped with their newfound knowledge and increased confidence, the student teams were set a field optimisation business challenge. With a deadline to meet, health and safety and environmental considerations to take into account, a highly competitive atmosphere emerged between the teams. Success depended on accuracy, team work & communication skills. While all the teams produced commendable presentations at the end of the day it was team Erskine who were finally judged the winners.
