Chemistry at Work 2009

This year saw 693 S3/S4 pupils from 15 Secondary schools from as far afield as Elgin & Banff attend this years Chemistry at Work event.

The event, which is hosted by the University of Aberdeen Chemistry Department and funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry, aims to encourage school pupils studying Standard Grade Chemistry to consider further study by demonstrating, through talks and practical demonstrations, the vast range of potential careers available.

This year saw demonstrations from Stoneywood Papermill, The Robert Gordon University, Grampian Fire Service, Clariant Oil Services, Aberdeen College, M-I Swaco, Macphie of Glenbervie and University of Aberdeen. 

Pupils took part in a number of practical demonstrations and talks, from making paper and polymers, fingerprinting in forensics, chemicals in food technology and the oil industry, chemistry of combustion and the science of everyday objects in Gases, Balloons & Bananas.
