National Science and Engineering Week
National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) (formerly National Science Week), organised by the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science, is an opportunity for people of all ages, areas and organisations to take part in science, engineering and technology activities.
The theme for NSEW 2008 in the NE of Scotland was the Science of Food.
NSEW Outreach Events and Discovery Day are now completed for this year. The dates for NSEW 2009 will appear on this website as soon as they are available.
The NSEW 2008 Great Gig Grub Competition was judged by Fiona Matthew from NHS Grampian. These are her comments about the two winning menus:
Eleanor Jenkins (P6) from St Peter’s RC School
Grilled kippers, pasta with chives, cucumber, peppers & carrots combined with low fat yoghurt, served with a glass of milk, baked rice and strawberries.
The kippers are a good source of protein and contribute to the target to eat 2 portions of fish per week, one of which should be oily. The pasta salad is a good source of carbohydrate for providing energy with the vegetables contributing to the vitamins and minerals required by the body. The yoghurt used in the salad with the glass of milk and the rice pudding are all a good source of calcium required for strong bones and teeth. The strawberries along with the vegetables in the pasta salad all contribute to the 5 a day target, I particularly like the variety of vegetables used in this meal as we should try to eat a range of fruit and vegetables likened to eating a rainbow in order to maximise our vitamin and mineral intake. This meal should provide the band with their nutritional needs in order to perform, as well as contributing to a healthy balanced diet.

Lasagne, glass of milk and carrot cake
Lasagne provides many of the nutrients our bodies require in order to be fit and healthy. The meat combined with vegetables is a good source of protein with the added vegetables contributing to the 5-a-day target. The pasta is a good source of carbohydrate which the band will require to give them energy for their performance. The cheese sauce will also provide additional protein, calcium and fat, which the body requires. The additional glass of milk will provide further calcium for strong bones and teeth. The carrot cake will provide a treat at the end of the meal with additional energy giving properties which should provide the band with enough energy to see them through their performance.
Each of the winners will receive a prize for themselves and prize for their school or science club.
