What is CREST?:-
CREST, CREativity in Science and Technology, is a project-based award scheme for school students, which aims to recognise and accredit their achievements in science, engineering and technology. The project can be: a) initiated by the student; b) organised by the teacher as part of the curriculum coursework, Science Fair or science/engineering/technology club; or c) linked to other schemes including Eco-schools, Healthy Eating projects, Transition projects, Young Engineers, Go4SET, Nuffield Bursaries, Masterclasses, Summer Schools, Engineering Education Scheme (EES), Advanced Higher projects etc etc.
The Aim of the Scheme is:-
- To motivate and encourage students of all ages and abilities to develop an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); and
- To encourage students to explore their own ideas and interests.
What are the Benefits?:-
To Teachers/Students
- Develops student’s problem-solving, investigative and communication skills;
- Gives tangible recognition of achievement through accreditation;
- Provides an opportunity for students to display their work at regional and national levels;
- Bridges the gap between science in the classroom and the ‘real world’ - encourages projects that have an industry and/or community link;
Levels of Awards:-
Three awards are available to school pupils - bronze, silver and gold The difference between each award level is not necessarily one of age, but rather of motivation and capability. The bronze award requires about 10 hours work. However, the higher levels demand greater time commitment and problem-solving skills. The silver award requires about 40 hours work and the gold 100 hours work. The gold level award requires external mentoring (Although external mentoring is not essential for the bronze or silver awards, it is something to be encouraged by the use of Researchers in Residence and Science & Engineering Ambassadors).
Scottish CREST RinR Conference :-
This year, CREST and Researchers in Residence are holding a joint conference at the University of Dundee on Thursday 12th June, from 10am until 2.30pm.
