Chemistry at Work

Chemistry at work is an event organised by TechFest-SetPoint and sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The University of Aberdeen, kindly allow the Department of Chemistry to host the event in Aberdeen, and the Inverness event is supported by Inverness College UHI.

Chemistry at Work offers S3 pupils the opportunity to appreciate the place of chemistry in everyday life and the world of work, with particular emphasis on what is happening in the local area. It aims to show a positive image of the chemical sciences and to present them as exciting, interesting and wealth-creating activities that are worth considering as the basis of a career.

The Aberdeen event is typically run in the first week of June over 4 mornings. Pupils participate in a hands-on workshop and listen to presentations from a diverse range of companies.

In Inverness, Chemistry at work was run over two days in June.

Curious About Chemistry

Curious about Chemistry is an event for Primary 7 pupils in Tayside. TechFest-SetPoint are proud to organise this popular event which is sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry and this year, as in previous years, it is supported by Dundee College who are kindly providing their Graham Street Campus to host the event.

Curious about Chemistry provides an exciting opportunity for young people to experience some of the basic principles of chemistry as they are applied in industry research and everyday life, with people who practice chemistry in their jobs. Organisations that use chemistry in their work are invited to provide short illustrations about aspects of their jobs. The organisations range from those whose main activity is chemistry to companies that use chemistry in less obvious ways. In addition, each of them is locally based, giving a particular emphasis on what is happening and opportunities in the local area.

The presentations, as well as being inspiring, educational and informative, promise to be fun and exciting, with hands-on or interactive elements enabling you and your pupils to become actively involved. Curious about Chemistry provides pupils with a wonderful opportunity to gain first hand experience of chemistry in the “real world” from people who are actually involved. It will help them to understand the importance of chemistry and how it influences their everyday life.
